Improvisation

My interest in improvisation began as a teenager experimenting with ornamentation of the music of Corelli and others.

As musical director of Early Music group the City Waites, I incorporated a great deal of improvisation into our performances, bringing out a contextually-authentic attitude of musicians 'busking'.

This attitude informed my musical outputs while training as a music therapist. Since free-improvisation is the language of expression used in Nordoff-Robbins music therapy I decided to develop this language as a form of therapeutic communication to take beyond the bounds of work with people with diagnosed illness into the wider community of the 'well'.

I run two improvisation groups The Next Room & Le Collectif performing regularly in London.
